Mercia Archers was officially formed in February 2019, from a group of friends wanting a club where archery was supported and encouraged in all of it’s forms. The club ethos is one of friendship, support and encouragement; regardless of bow type, discipline, or ability. We are all passionate about our sport, and enjoy sharing our huge breadth of experience with anyone who shares our interest (and sometimes those who don’t!)
The hardest part of forming any club is deciding on a name(!), but quite quickly we settled on adopting the historic name for middle England, once centred on the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border. Mercia is also famed for it’s female warriors as much as the men, and of course it gave us the excuse we didn’t need to have a dragon on the club logo!
We are very fortunate to have found a home at the Gresley Old Hall Community Welfare Centre in South Derbyshire. Not only do we have a huge field suitable for clout and target tournaments, but also a small indoor hall for shooting through the winter, a bar, kitchen, function room; on site there’s even indoor bowls and whippet racing! What more could you want from a venue?! Visit www.gresleyoldhall.wordpress.com for more information
As a rare club with the facility to shoot clout archery, you can expect us to make maximum use of this, with an open invitation for visiting archers to practice as guests (£4 fee), or join us as associate members
As a new club it’ll take a while to get on our feet, but watch out for have-a-go events on our Facebook page, and contact for information on Beginners’ Courses, which will run for small groups as frequently as we are able. Additionally, we will have exciting tournaments up and running in no time, which will be advertised far and wide in the archery community!
Currently through the summer we shoot outdoors on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, and continue outdoors through the winter, as well as shooting indoors on a Monday and Friday evening. We also have the benefit of access to shoot outside of these times, so long as the field is not used by other sporting groups
Whether visiting to find out what we do, have a first go at archery, complete a Beginners’ Course, shoot as guests or associate members, or shoot as visitors to our events and tournaments, we very much look forward to seeing you on the shooting line!
